Carnivals

Carnivals
By Li Reichlin
Carnivals are frightening, on a certain level.
You were frightening too, though I did not know it.
You were the magician, and I was only sawed in half.
You waved your hand,
And turned a fun-house into a match
Of tug-of-war.
You made my heart spin,
Like a carousel.
And now the carnival is closing.
The games are gone; prizes won.
But I have won nothing.
I made myself sick on sugar.
And you left me to
Clean up the fairgrounds.
